Unit 21 – Expressing an opinion

1) Listen to the following dialogue:

AT THE TRAIN STATION

2) The Present Subjunctive

The present subjunctive is used when we there is uncertainty or doubt or when we express an opinion. We are not talking about definite facts.

Examples:

Spero che il treno parta in orario. I hope the trains leaves on time.
Non mi piace che mi raccontino bugie. I don’t like the fact that they lie to me.

It is generally used in the second part of a sentence, often after “che”.
Occasionally it is used in the principle part of a sentence.

Examples:

– Siate gentili! Be kind!
– Prego, mi dicaGo ahead, tell me.

It is formed by adding various endings to the root of the verb.

Examples:

Luca crede che noi andiamo via. Luca thinks that we’re leaving.

– We can often omit “che” when we use the subjunctive form.

Examples:

Penso sia un’ottima idea. I think it’s a good idea.
Temo sia già partito. I’m afraid he’s already left.
Speriamo sia puntuale! Let’s hope he’s on time!
